SACRAMENTO IN AWE FOLLOWING ‘LARGER THAN LIFE,’ PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON
The Sacramento Speakers Series was honored to bring 42nd President of the United States, Bill Clinton to the Memorial Auditorium in Sacramento.  President Clinton marks the second engagement of our 2012-2013 season and a better venue could not have been chosen to set this unique event apart from this year’s already exceptional lineup.

Immediately upon the opening of the doors, the venue was buzzing with excitement as patrons filled the hallways on the way to their seats eagerly anticipating the moment President Bill Clinton would take the stage.  President Clinton’s remarks merely touched the surface of what he would later expand upon throughout an extensive question and answer session, moderated by Sacramento Speakers Series Managing Principal, Mitchell S. Ostwald.  The questions asked provoked the spontaneous thoughts of the President and enabled patrons to view him in a truly candid setting.

When addressing a question relating to students interested in pursuing a career in politics, the President recommended, first and foremost, that they expose themselves to different types of people and to learn to listen and speak to them.  President Clinton demonstrates this as he captured the audience with his humble approach and is ability to relate with people from all walks of life.

We have received a great deal of attention through local media sources following President Clinton’s visit, including a video segment from Sacramento’s KCRA 3: Former President Bill Clinton speaks in Sacramento, which featured participants from the speakers series student program, Share the Vision.  The speakers series remain committed to bringing the highest caliber of speakers to evoke thought in the community.

The next speaker lined up for the series will be on January 8th at 8:00 pm as New York Times Columnist; Thomas Friedman comes to the Community Center Theater.  Doors open at 7:00 pm.

President Bill Clinton, founder of the William J. Clinton Foundation and the 42nd President of the United States, will come to Sacramento to deliver his speech “Embracing our Common Humanity”  on Tuesday, December 4th. President Clinton was the first Democratic president in six decades to be elected twice – first in 1992 and then in 1996. Under his leadership, the country enjoyed the strongest economy in generations and the longest economic expansion in US history, including the creation of more than 22 million jobs.

Thomas Friedman internationally renowned author, reporter, and New York Times columnist will be speaking Tuesday January 8th. Friedman is the recipient of three Pulitzer Prizes and the author of five bestselling books, among them “From Beirut to Jerusalem,”  “The World Is Flat,” and “Hot, Flat, and Crowded.” While critics may take issue with his views, writings style, his penchant for excessive optimism, his support of the Iraq war and views on globalization, he is the writer much of the public looks to for straight talk about world events.

Michelle Rhee a leading advocate for school reform will be speaking Tuesday January 29th; Rhee founded The New Teacher Project in 1997, which has recruited 23,000 new teachers across the country. Under her leadership as Chancellor of D.C. Public Schools, the worst performing school district in the country at the same time saw double-digit growth in state reading and math scores among seventh, eighth and tenth graders. Rhee most recently founded StudentsFirst, an organization aiming to raise $1 billion to reform education in the nation, and is now a member of the Sacramento community.

Dr. Louise Leakey paleontologist, conservationist, educator and National Geographic explorer-in-residence will be speaking Wednesday February 27th; it’s the third generation of the famous Leakey family to dig for humanity’s past in East Africa. Dr. Robert Ballard - Deep-sea explorer, famous for his historic discovery of the wreckage of the Titanic more than 12,000 feet below the surface of the North Atlantic, will speak on Tuesday April 2nd 2013. Richard Roeper Review

Our fourth engagement, although not our most popular speaker, made for an enjoyable light-hearted evening. A majority of patrons seemed to think that Richard Roeper wasn’t on the same level as our other speakers this season and although I tend to agree, I’m not sure who could have filled the slot following Dr. Rice and not fallen flat by comparison. I appreciated where Mr. Roeper was coming from; he didn’t take himself too seriously and he definitely had me laughing through the whole day (even before the engagement).

The following illustrates how patrons felt about the Richard Roeper engagement:
(1=Low/5=High)

Lecture: 3.2
Q&A: 3.8
Moderator: 4.1
Lighting: 4.1
Acoustics: 3.7
Overall: 3.4

53% of audience polled felt the engagement was "money well spent".
51% of audience polled felt the night met their expectations.

Comments from our patrons:

“Mr. Roeper must have an IQ above 180 with broad interests and obviously high energy. His humor and varied background helped to make him a lively and informative speaker. I agree with his criteria for a good movie and enjoyed his quick wit and sometimes "smart ass" comments. Delightful.”

“He has a great sense of humor and I enjoyed that - though his presentation was a bit weak. Enjoyable but not memorable.”

“Although not a topic in which I was particularly interested, it is good to hear speakers from a variety of areas. Mr. Roeper was amusing and certainly knowledgeable about his profession.”

Condoleezza Rice Review

Our third speaker, easily the most highly-anticipated of the season, did not disappoint. Dr. Rice was well received even by people who “absolutely disliked the Bush administration” and who were “negative about seeing her”. It is speakers like Dr. Rice who really are the pinnacle of what we look for in speakers for our Series. Although she is a political figure and may have been controversial while in office, everyone was able to enjoy her.

Going into it, I was sort of overwhelmed by all of her accomplishments. I thought of her as an untouchable God-like woman with an air of intelligence so far above mine it would be like she was speaking in tongues. However in reality, I was amazed by how down to earth she was and how she casually glossed over her accomplishments with her childhood mantra of needing to be “twice as good”. I’m still trying not to compare my own feeble efforts with her daily gym routine.

Overall, I’d have to agree with the majority of the audience that she was nothing if not inspiring. It’s easy to see why she got the highest marks of the season in most categories.

The following illustrates how patrons felt about the Condoleezza Rice engagement:

(1=Low/5=High)

Lecture: 4.7 (highest of the season!)
Q&A: 4.7 (highest of the season!)
Moderator: 4.6 (highest of the season!)
Lighting: 4.3
Acoustics: 3.9 (we apologize for the sound problems; they have been taken care of for next engagement)
Overall: 4.6 (highest of the season!)

93% of audience polled felt the engagement was "money well spent".

91% of audience polled felt the night met their expectations.

Comments from our patrons:

“I am a charter member of the Speakers Series and my husband and I both thought it was the best event so far! All the other great ones just slipped to second place!”

“I did not like her very much when she was in Washington but after hearing her speak last night, I found her to be funny, forthright and honest. She is a great asset to our country.”

“[I] loved the non-personal politics she talked about. She was very natural and her manner gave everyone the feeling you were sitting on the couch with her talking…talent to be able to do that.”

“This was our first time attending a Speaker Series event and we were so impressed with Condoleezza Rice - such an intelligent, versatile, and articulate speaker. We were entertained, educated and inspired. Thank you!”
